5 Common Sounds that Will Damage Your Hearing

If you regularly use a blow dryer, or know someone who does, you might think twice before doing so in the future.

Blow dryers sound at 100 decibels, the same volume as a chainsaw, power drill and snow mobile. One hundred decibels packs a whopping punch of noise. You are flirting with danger and will damage your hearing if you expose your ears to this dB range on a regular basis.

Luckily, I have never liked blow dryers and even walk out of a hair salon in mid winter with a warm hat covering my wet hair.

In addition, when you take into account the high EMF – electromagnetic frequencies – your blow dryer emits, then, let’s just say, you might want to shelve it permanently.

So what else sounds at 100 decibels. Subway platforms for one. While waiting for your train, your ears are getting a dangerous noise bath. And, believe it or not, the underground/subway, the chainsaw, the power drill, blow dryer and snow mobile are louder than a screaming child or lawnmower. Those only clock in at 90 dB.

Consider this. Each 10 dB addition represents a Tenfold increase in sound. So 100 decibels are 10 times noisier than 90 decibels. Similar to how scientists measure earthquakes on the Richter scale.

Try to stay away from harmful, high decibel noises whenever you can. You’ll protect your precious hearing and preserve your ears for life.

Tania Gabrielle French

Jolting Your Mind Awake Is Dangerous

Very early this morning I was awakened by the jarring buzz of an alarm clock. Clayton was getting up to do some recording while the world was still a quiet place.

I soon got back to sleep, but when I woke up later, I recalled the feeling of an alarming noise piercing through my brain and body.

Don’t know about you, but releasing stress hormones first thing in the morning is not my idea of a good start to the day. A jolt to the system is distressing to your immune system and disruptive to your mind. What’s even more surprising is how many people use their radio or other high decibel sounds to jerk their brain alive nearly every morning.

But try getting my husband to bed earlier, and he might do it 1 in 6 times, remember how good it felt and yet fall right back into his old habits.

Let’s leave the West for a moment and look at what the Maoris of New Zealand do. If a person needs to be aroused from sleep, another Maori helps by first calling in a soft, low tone, then gradually increases the volume until the sleeper is awake.

Why all this care. Because Maoris, like other indigenous cultures around the globe believe the spirit must have time to return to its physical base. There are a lot of mostly Eastern cultures that believe in gentle awakening. The one common theme they have is a deep consideration for the sleeper and his or her mental and spiritual welfare.

Look, I know it’s not possible to hire a Maori to gently awaken you by softly singing in your ear on weekday mornings. But I have some other gentle solutions for you.

Instead of using your alarm -

1. Go to bed earlier so you wake up naturally at the appointed hour.

2. Tell yourself to wake up at the time you want to. This works amazingly well.

3. Have your CD player turn on the gentle ‘Rejuvenation Visualization’ CD at the appointed time and give yourself a peaceful, serene start to the day.

Even at a louder volume, the ‘Rejuvenation Visualization’ CD, one of 5 CDs in The Secret Power of Words and Music, will help your awakening process immeasurably. They’ll be no more feelings of danger and fear because you’ll eliminate morning after morning of shocking your system awake. Don’t underestimate the power of this gentle tool.

In a nutshell, the delicate bridge between our waking and dreaming minds can easily be damaged a little bit more every morning. When you apply gentleness to this very special time of day, the rewards will be great.

Warm Regards,
Tania Gabrielle French

How to Eliminate Uncertainty

Clayton was convinced we wouldn’t make it home from Tampa on Sunday evening. The plane had a mechanical problem and the uncertainty of ever leaving Florida that night was palpable.

He turned to me and said, ‘I don’t think we’re going to make our connection to Asheville. So, we’ve got to decide whether we’re camping out in Tampa or Atlanta.’

‘We’ll be sleeping in our beds tonight – I know it,’ I replied. I really was certain this was going to happen.

I was playing with my future, you see. It was a lot more fun imagining arriving home that night, however late, than living on pins and needles without a change of clothes and other essentials.

Eventually we left Tampa two hours late and arrived in Atlanta after our connecting flight was due to depart. Happily we the monitor showed our next flight was also delayed do to rain.

Though it wasn’t quite enough time to get our luggage transferred, I kept with my happy vision of both suitcases and family making it home that night. By this time I was thrilled to know We were going to make it, so continuing my fun future by including our luggage was easy.

10 minutes after we got to the gate there was an announcement. One of the oxygen masks needed some adjusting and we’d be leaving an hour later.

‘Yes, yes, yes,’ I said, ‘now our luggage will definitely make it too.’

All this fun and games affected our four-year-old daughter Clara as well. To the delight of the weary and tired fellow travelers, she started imitating the mannerisms of people walking by our gate. A very cute Marcel Marceau performance. Funny thing is, she was just doing it to amuse herself.

As you can imagine, there were big smiles all round.

Fun and games don’t just have to occur when your playing a board game or telling a joke. Fun begins in your creative mind. But you can only access it by being in a relaxed and receptive state.

Make a commitment to having fun. Then watch how feelings of uncertainty eradicate like magic. A powerful guarantee to a happy future is now yours.

Warm Regards,
Tania Gabrielle French

Tibetan Singing Bowls in Outer Space

This morning I was completely mesmerized by Tibetan Singing Bowls. Their deep harmonies penetrated right to my soul. My brain and body felt like they were being scanned by a warm laser-beam. Truly primordial and other-worldly.

Turns out the exact sounds Tibetan Singing Bowls make have been resounding in our universe for billions of years.

Primordial sounds are everywhere. Even in outer space. Scientists have been listening to the sounds within our galaxy since the Voyager I and II spacecrafts were launched back in 1977.

NASA made sure that the Voyager I and II spacecrafts had microphones. These mikes made incredible recordings of deep space. NASA even released a set of CDs with these mysterious out-of-space sounds.

What they heard was stunning – because it sounded exactly like a mixture of high frequency sounds found in nature – here on planet Earth.

What are those sounds, you might be asking. Earth’s primordial sounds are a sonic mix of birds, dolphins, waves, wind, human voices, and other tones. They are high frequency sounds. When you listen to them, they’ll slow down your brain waves and cause profound relaxation.

Here are some out-of-this-world examples of what NASA found:

- The planet Jupiter sounds like the high-pitched cries of dolphins.

- Miranda, the smallest moon of Uranus, sounds like choirs of voices. Imagine that.

- Even more intriguing are the sounds that are produced by Uranus’ rings. They are virtually identical to those created by Tibetan singing bowls used by monks during meditation.

These sounds are so powerful because they exist everywhere. And hearing them reminds you of your primordial roots. They’re what Carl Jung described as the collective unconscious.

Since sound travels 5 times faster through water than through air, and our bodies are over 70 percent water, listening to high frequency sounds is a great way to get total body stimulation. Especially on the cellular level. Study after study has shown the positive healing effects on people’s cells from listening to high frequency sound and music every day.

High frequency music is a great way to reap these cellular benefits. You can benefit from these sounds by listening to the 5 CDs of The Secret Power of Words and Music.

Expose your ears to positive sounds –primordial sounds of joy.

Warm Regards,
Tania Gabrielle French

P.S. Many people hydrate their bodies with purified water. How about charging your 70 percent H2O body with positive high frequencies – in the form of music. There’s no easier way to rejuvenate and release tension and stress. The most effortless way is to join the Sounds of Gold Inner Circle and receive a special high frequency sound package every month - and much, much more.

How Sounds Affect Empathy

The other day I was hobbling down the stairs after I pulled a muscle in my thigh. My daughter, who was downstairs, heard me and asked,

‘Mommy, why are you saying ouch, ouch, ouch.’

It’s a simple example of how sounds affect empathy. Two new studies show how people empathize with others when they hear them speak. Or just know what they’re doing.

Every time you prepare to make a move, like biting into an apple, mirror neurons begin firing. These same neurons are activated when you’re simply watching another person pick up an apple and bite into it.

But what if you only hear the sounds being made without seeing them.

You will still empathize with the other person’s actions because mirror neurons also respond to sounds. In other words, whether you’re performing the action or hearing someone perform it, you’ve got the same empathetic response.

‘Mirror neurons transform what you see or hear other people do into what you would do yourself,’ Christian Keysers of the University of Groningen, Netherlands explains.

It’s exactly what happens when you watch a movie. Your brain Can’t differentiate between what’s real and what’s fiction. Your brain only responds to stimuli. As a result, watching a scary or violent or sad movie will depress your immune system, because your brain thinks it’s your own reality.

Mirror neurons also respond to written words. Even a simple written phrase like ‘biting a watermelon’ will trigger exactly the same response as watching a video of someone eating a watermelon.

Your mind has to stimulate the action – as if it’s happening to you - in order to grasp the meaning of the words.

This is extraordinary news. Because it proves that all external stimuli enter your body and are felt and processed, whether good or bad. Whether you realize it or not.

Your body is a living vibrating instrument. It resonates with every word you read or hear, every picture you see, every sound you listen to. This happens all day and through the night, since your dreams are just movies in your mind.

Considering all this, don’t you think it would be a good idea to expose your brain to sounds and words that uplift and inspire you. Sounds that remind you to relax. Music and words with a clear message of joy.

If Plants Could Talk

I’ve always loved flowers, trees and plants. But I never thought of them as being ‘conscious’.

Well, I’ll admit I do talk to flowers before cutting them.

Last night I read something absolutely riveting. Yes, it was about plants. And no, it was not boring.

It concerned the story of how Steve Backster, America’s foremost lie-detector examiner in the 1960s, uncovered the secret life of plants.

One day, just for fun, Backster wanted to see if plants register any ‘emotion’ – by sending electrical signals on standard lie-detector equipment. The same way humans do in response to stress.

He knew the most effective way of triggering a strong reaction in humans was to threaten their life – so decided to threaten the plant’s life as well. His first experiment was to dunk the leaf of the plant into a hot cup of coffee. The plant didn’t respond.

Next he decided to burn the leaf of the plant. With electrodes attached, the plant registered the same increased-stress polygraph response as a human would if his hand had been burned. Here’s the kicker. This response happened -

Before he lit the match.

The moment Backster THOUGHT about burning the plant in his mind, even BEFORE he could even move to grab a match, the lie detector began registering a graph with saw tooth motion.

Needless to say, he was stumped.

Then he Pretended to burn the plant, knowing he really wasn’t going to do it, and the lie detector stayed motionless. So the plant could not only read thoughts, it could detect the difference between real and pretend thoughts.

Even more fascinating is, when Backster burned the leaf of a neighboring plant not connected with the equipment, the original plant, which was still hooked up, registered the ‘pain’ response again.

How could this be, I thought. And then again, why not. Why not consider that plants are conscious and connected to every living thing around them. A big why not, indeed.

When I read about this last night, I couldn’t sleep for a while. The info was just so powerful and I wanted time to think.

As I lay there quietly I came close to tears.

If plants are this perceptive, humans are too. FAR more sensitive than we give ourselves credit for.

Want to be as perceptive as a plant? Funny you ask, because just by relaxing and giving your mind and body a respite, you can be. By taking a couple of deep belly expanding breaths, you can be.

You will be, when you seamlessly glide into a relaxed state of total consciousness with every month’s Sounds of Gold CD.

Why not water the seeds of your mind with gentle, powerful music. There are truly extraordinary sounds in store for you as a member of the Sounds of Gold Inner Circle. With the first month on me, there’s no reason not to give it a whirl!

Warm Regards,
Tania Gabrielle French

P.S. By the way, Cleve Backster and other scientists around the world continued experimentation with plants and always reached the same conclusions. Except that they couldn’t explain them with current scientific knowledge. That’s changing now with quantum physics. Your own quantum, consciousness-expanding sound experience is just a click away.

How To Conquer Mediocrity

A few years ago it finally dawned on me – affirmations just don’t work. For the most part, they’re a waste of your and my time.

When I last made an affirmation, it went something like this - ‘I am wealthy’ or ‘I have unlimited energy,’ and it didn’t do me a speck of good. First of all, the ‘I am, or ‘I have’ part wasn’t true. And because it wasn’t true, I didn’t believe it. As a result I felt even worse.

Then, I suddenly realized I had powerful affirmations already. Ones I wasn’t aware of, because they’d become such a seamless part of who I was.

My affirmations were actually every thought I think and every word I speak. My self-talk, my internal dialogue, is a stream of affirmations.

Put a different way - My HIDDEN expectations are creating my future.

And then came an even bigger newsflash. My hidden expectations were definitely NOT lining up with my wants. No amount of fake affirmations would change that.

So I wondered.

How do I rid myself of hidden expectations I’ve picked up eons ago, often unwillingly from influences surrounding me? What to do with those random worries popping up and distracting me from what I really want to do. Why did it seem like those random doubts really weren’t so random. That they appeared like clockwork when their powerful status was being challenged.

And there was my answer. Pay attention and observe those unwelcome affirmations. If you turn a blind eye, they remain in control. By watching them they’ll disappear like magic. Very simple, and yet – not so easily accomplished.

Unless you tune out those unwelcome thoughts with music.

I melt those old cobwebs every day. The easy way. As I’m writing this I’m listening to a grand piece of music fit to take even skeptical minds into a state of creative joy. The music inspires a relaxed discipline, the kind that’s effortless and rewarding.

You see, real discipline only comes when you’re relaxed. Strange, but true.

Which pieces of music can reign in your wayward thoughts without much effort? Which melodies and rhythms release those magical endorphins and empty your mind of cobwebs? The answer to that question is revealed in January’s Sounds of Gold Newsletter.

Escape from the world of illusions and dreams. Give your heart and mind something to smile about.

Tania Gabrielle French

Warning - Decibels and Hearing Loss

Yesterday, while Clara was playing with her friend Kate, they began screaming while jumping on a mini-trampoline. The noise from their high-pitched voices put an immediate stop to my conversation with Kate’s mom.

It reminded me to answer a reader’s question from the mailbag today. He wonders if playing musical instruments can cause hearing loss. We’ll look at that and more.

"Hi Tania,
As somebody who is an expert in this field I was wondering what information if any you may have on Music Induced Hearing Damage (MIHD). I play the violin and have been wondering recently if I am causing damage to my hearing in the course of my daily practice. I can't seem to get a straight answer from anybody on this subject. There are some statistics claiming that 50% of classical musicians and 30% of rock musicians have some degree of hearing damage."

Thank You,
Vuk Bulajic

Great question, Vuk. You CAN receive hearing damage if you’re a musician. For classical musicians hearing damage most often occurs when they play in an orchestra. Not so much from their own playing, but from the brass and percussion section behind them.

Hearing loss begins when you have sustained exposure from 90-95 dBs and upwards. A violin plays between 82-92 dBs. Sustaining a loud violin sound long enough to cause damage would be very difficult, if not downright impossible.

You’d have to play for eight straight hours at 90 decibels to cause hearing loss.

Other instruments have a higher decibel range. For example, a cello ranges from 85-111 dBs, whereas the clarinet and trombone range from 85-114dBs.

Now let’s look at LIVE symphonic music and rock music.

A symphonic climax ranks between 120-137 decibels. Pain in your eardrums begins at 125 decibels. If you listen to 15 consecutive minutes of music at 115 decibels you’ll cause hearing damage. So, yes, a long symphonic climax could cause damage, even to members of the audience.

As loud as symphonic music can be, rock music comes out even louder. No surprise there. Hold on to your seats, because the decibel level for a peak rock concert is 150 or more. That’s really painful.

I’ll be sharing more on high decibels and their effect on your health.

Meanwhile, restore your equilibrium by listening to sounds of rejuvenation and joy. The Secret Power of Words and Music is your ticket to healthy, positively charged music.

Warm Regards,
Tania Gabrielle French

Longevity Is Tied To Doing

Last weekend Clara wanted to spin and jump on the ice. She’d only been skating for the second time in her young life.

Having seen another woman accomplish these feats live, right in front of her, she envisioned herself just as accomplished.

So, I said to her, ‘Clara, you have to learn how to skate first.’

She replied, ‘Mommy, I don’t WANT to learn, I want to skate.’

Then, for the rest next hour, Clara tried spinning – veerry slowly. First with our help, then by herself. Obviously the word learn didn’t appeal to her. She wanted to get right down into the dirt and do it. Very Clara, and very childlike.

This determination and freedom appeals to me. Though I’m not against the word learn per se, the word ‘do’ does appeal more.

Thing is, people who keep doing, i.e. learning, live longer lives. It’s the one factor researchers around the world consistently agree on. In fact, doing/learning is more important than any other factor when determining the length and quality of your life.

When offered the opportunity to do something new, most won’t grab. Some might take a half-hearted stab. Sad but true.

It’s why I enjoy hanging around young children. Their endless curiosity is infectious and inspiring. We want Clara to keep her determination and joy in tact – forever. Her innocent questions keep us smiling AND thinking very clearly.

I myself am only interested and attracted to others who HAVE this inner sense of wondrous curiosity and urge to do/learn. They’ve got an energy that’s incredibly infectious. These people’s eyes sparkle, their spoken words have punch and focus behind them, and their joy is a natural, every-day ingredient.

It goes without saying that they clearly love what their doing and learning. It’s for those people I created the Sounds of Gold New Year’s Special. To recap:

The Smoking Gun

When I recall a certain piece of music, it’s usually in the right key and tempo.

What comes as news to me is most people, not just musicians, can hit the tempo of one of their favorite songs within a 4 percent margin of error. And two-thirds recall the correct pitch or key of the song within a semitone of the original one. This is amazing.

It’s the kind of accuracy only expected of pros, not your neighbors, family and friends.

This is especially true when you consider how our memories fade and degrade over time. Why is your favorite music so deeply encoded in your brain?

Why is music recalled so accurately?

Bring in another pro to answer the question. Dr. Daniel Levitin, a former producer in Hollywood, recently told the New York Times that he became disenchanted with the music industry in the 1990s. Instead, he decided to study the effect of music on the brain. Now he’s turning music psychology and neuroscience on its head.

His experiment stopping people on the street and asking them to sing one of their favorite songs, he realized he had a smoking gun.

“When you played the recording of them singing alongside the actual recording of the original song, it sounded like they were singing along,” Dr. Levitin told the New York Times.

Here’s what Dr. Levitin found. Music triggers the REWARD centers in your brain.

He and a band of other neuroscientists at McGill University observed people listening to classical music while inside a M.R.I. machine.

They found a waterfall of brain-chemical activity.

First the forebrain lit up - it analyzed the shape and meaning of the music. Then dopamine was released. Yes, the chemical that makes you feel like you’re having a VERY good time. In The Secret Power of Words and Music you can find out more about the “Chocolate, Sex and Drugs” effect classical music has.

Then another area in the brain associated with physical activity was triggered in all subjects.

“When we saw all this activity going on precisely in sync, in this order, we knew we had the smoking gun,” he said. “We’ve always known that music is good for improving your mood. But this showed precisely how it happens.”

It’s the rewarding experience that makes certain music so memorable.

Your brain absolutely thrives on good music. Hey, if you like the idea of feeling ‘high’ without eating or inhaling an unhealthy substance then join the other members of the Sounds of Gold Inner Circle Sounds of Gold Inner Circle - you’ll be compelled to nourish yourself consistently and effortlessly.
