How Mind and Ear are One

Back in Ancient Egypt the word for ‘ear’ and ‘mind’ were synonymous. This was because the mind interprets and gives meaning to sound.

Music was called ‘hy’, which translates to ‘joy’ and ‘gladness.’ Since Ancient Egyptians loved symbols, the picture for joy was a woman playing a round frame drum. This brings up an interesting piece of information.

Did you know that most of the percussionists in Ancient Egypt were women? At least when it came to sacred ceremonies. Some of these women were highly trained court musicians. Others were engaged by large temples as musician priestesses.

Everything in Ancient Egypt had more than one meaning. In this way the drum played an important role. It was used to coordinate the rhythms of oarsmen on the boats sailing the Nile. In the temples, this journey along the Nile was also enacted in sacred ceremonies. Here the musician priestesses depicted the soul sailing on a boat on the Milky Way to heaven.

Many or the hieroglyphs you’ll see show the god of wisdom, Thoth, accompanied by his daughter Maat, who embodied truth, sailing across the celestial waters of the sky. In the boat was always a woman playing the frame drum, ordering the natural rhythms of the universe.

These hieroglyphs of women playing the drum are also seen on the walls of tombs. They symbolized receiving the soul of the deceased person and sailing him or her home.

So, just as the drum was used during times of war by male drummers and by women priestesses in sacred ceremonies, the great river Nile was not only a bringer of life to farmers but also believed to be a symbol of the Milky Way. Of course back then, city lights wouldn’t have obscured the beautiful Milky Way as they do now. Seeing the ‘river of light’ in the sky must have elicited awe and inspiration.

It’s no wonder then, that that music played such a significant role. Music IS motion, and motion is life. When we feel the joy in our daily motions, we have touched on something sacred.

Listen to all the sounds surrounding you today. Are they relaxing? Do the sounds uplift and remind you of beauty? Are they fluid, calm and invigorating?

Next time you get into your car or come home from work, turn on high frequency, positively charged sounds and watch yourself let go of tension, anxiety and stress. Use music in the way it was meant to be used. As a healing tool. Immerse your ears and mind in The Secret Power of Words and Music 5 CD package Now.

P.S. The phrase ‘It’s Music to My Ears’ is a great example of music as an instrument of joy. Joy is not a feeling many relate to in our hustle and bustle world. But it IS the most important emotion to finding inner peace. When something is ‘Music to Your Ears’, listen to it over and over again. Because, in reality, you are nourishing your hungry soul. http://www.artabundance.com/secretpower.htm
