Eating Up Quality Time
Eating Up Quality Time
Hi <$firstname$>,
While driving I had the radio tuned to an interview. An architect was giving his views on trophy kitchens and formal dining rooms - so popular in new homes and remodels today.
Why trophy. Because these high-end-everything mega kitchens aren’t much in use. Hardly ever, actually. Except for irradiating ready-made meals in the microwave.
He went on to say that more than half of Americans eat out most of the time. Meaning they go to a restaurant to get their daily meals. Almost all the time.
In addition, 75 percent of Americans get most of their meals prepared – Chinese takeout, Pizza deliveries, grocery deli, local delivery service - you name it. So, if you’re not eating out, you’re eating food that was made by someone else.
That’s a lot of people who aren’t using cutting boards and knives.
Makes Clayton and me look positively primitive - with our organic garden and trips to the local farmers markets. We’re even putting in cold frames for the winter. You probably don’t have the faintest idea of what I’m talking about. Simple cold frames allow you to grow lettuces, carrots and other veggies in the cold of winter. At any latitude. That’s what fresh food is – picked and eaten within minutes.
Makes me wonder about how we eat. And where.
I suspect it’s in front of the computer or teevee. Maybe while leafing through the latest magazine or newspaper. Ouch. I bet people aren’t eating in all those formal dining rooms. Maybe twice a year, according to this architect.
If you’re multitasking while eating, you might want to reconsider. Your quality of life could be affected.
An easy way to get into a tranquil, serene mood is by turning down the lights and lighting a couple of candles. Then switch on soothing music. While growing up, my father used to insist we eat dinner with candles and classical music.
I’ve found music to be the most immediate stress reducer, bar none. Indulge in the sounds that slow you down.
Warm Regards,
Tania Gabrielle French
