How Infrasound Manipulates You
If you’ve ever heard an organ in church or in concert, you might have been manipulated by infrasound.
A few years ago I attended an organ recital in Los Angeles. When those big pipes began to vibrate I was instantly taken back to my childhood. Sitting in church in awe and fear of those sounds.
Little did I know that organs have a magical power over our emotions. In fact, people who experience a sense of spirituality in church may actually be reacting to the extreme low bass sounds in some organ pipes.
Or so scientists think.
Some cathedrals have organ pipes that are so long that they emit these extremely low bass sounds, also called infrasounds. They’re lower than 20 Hertz and are pretty much inaudible to humans.
Recently the BBC reported that scientists in the UK pumped these infrasounds into a concert hall – and found they could instill strange feelings in the audience at will.
It’s not anything you’ll want to experience. These low frequency sounds gave the audience feelings of coldness, anxiety, an extreme sense of sorrow and shivers down the spine. Makes me wonder if the Puritans used long organ pipes as leverage before and after their sermons. And then went off on their witch-hunts.
Infrasounds so powerful that they can vibrate your internal organs. Scientists involved in this study also found that they could explain hauntings - the sense that some unseen thing or person are in the room.
Turns out that our addiction to extreme bass notes has existed for over 500 years and didn’t begin with rock ‘n roll.
"It has been suggested that because some organ pipes in churches and cathedrals produce infrasound this could lead to people having weird experiences which they attribute to God," said Professor Richard Wiseman, a psychologist from University of Hertfordshire.
There’s no end to how sounds make you feel. The choice of what you want your cells to vibrate to is yours alone. For a high frequency, positive sound experience get the 5 CDs in The Secret Power of Words and Music package.
