Hollywood Update
My husband Clayton is making a short trip to Los Angeles. Not to record a film score this time. Yesterday he was leading the orchestra for big revamp for a major network.
With the arrival of Katie Couric as their new CBS Evening News Anchor on September 5, CBS decided to ditch all its current music for all news-related stories, including the CBS News theme which they’ve been using for twenty years.
So they hired Academy-Award winning film composer James Horner to give them a musical makeover. Should be interesting.
I’m not a newswatcher myself, but just may have to switch on the teevee to catch the new sounds.
Then Clayton told me during his lunch break yesterday, that one of Katie Couric’s assistants interviewed him for a behind-the-scenes piece. Turns out, Katie will be reporting on all the changes in a story.
As for the music, Clayton says they recorded themes for all kinds of eventualities - a theme for war, election bits and long versions, a pastoral, heartwarming theme, and more.
The interviewer asked Clayton how the process differed from recording a film score. He said that in movie cues are longer and can last as much as 12 minutes. These cues were 30 seconds or less. However the recording process was the same.
Then Clayton was asked how the musicians felt about doing this special scoring session. He answered that everyone felt really honored to take part of this history making process of recording for the first woman to anchor a major daily network newscast and the CBS news tradition.
The sound transformation of CBS News will greatly help to acclimate viewers to this new transition. People associate music with visuals and emotions. James Horner’s music will break the pattern with the past and introduce a fresh new feeling to the network.
Clayton is featured on most of my recordings including The Secret Power of Words and Music CDs. What he does with his 1781 Italian violin is extraordinary and very powerful. He is not an ‘in your face’ musician. His approach is a silken one - his playing penetrates your heart and mind like like a laserbeam of light. It’s not to be missed.
Warm Regards,
Tania Gabrielle French
